Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakariah, the main contender to Farouk Aliu Mahama in the parliamentary primary for the Yendi Constituency held on January 27, 2024 does not want to cause trouble for the New Patriotic Party (NPP0 in Yendi even though she expressed disappointment in the decision of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party to confirm him as the candidate for the December 7 poll, a political analyst, Dr Jonathan Asante Otchere, has said.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NPP on Tuesday, April 9 confirmed Farouk Aliu Mahama as the parliamentary candidate for the Yendi.
The Yendi constituency parliamentary elections were marred by violence leading to both candidates in the election declaring themselves as winners of the race.

Hajia Abibata also raised concerns over the party’s 3rd National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Masahudu Osman, for “purportedly” confirming Mr. Aliu Mahama as the parliamentary candidate-elect for the constituency.
According to her, the decision is sad.
Reacting to the NED decision, she wrote in press release dated April 9, issued after the party announced its decision.“I have noted with surprise and sadness the decision of the NEC of our Party to declare my opponent, Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, the Parliamentary Candidate for the 2024 parliamentary elections for the Yendi Constituency. I strongly disagree with this decision but in the supreme interest of the Party, the President of the Republic, H. E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and the Presidential Candidate of the party H. E. Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, and all well-meaning members of our esteemed party, I respect the party’s decision.”
Speaking on this matter on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3 on Tuesday, April 9, Dr Jonathan Asante Otchere said “Certainly, you could see that it is more of a political expediency on the part of the party as it were to to allow Farouk to go ahead. You have to also understand that sometimes political expediency could help but at other times it could lead to some kind of unenvisaged conflict and think that is what is likely to happen.
“I can foresee where the woman is coming from, She is occupying a very juicy position and for now, since the party is still in government she doesn’t want to rock the boat.
“Because this is someone whose father was one time the Vice President, it means that he has more clout in the party than her.
“I see the decision as an affront to democracy, it is quite unfortunate. For now, you might have been able to solve a particular problem but what about the followers of the woman, are you sure you will be able to pacify them.”
