Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government is not being honest with Ghanaians concerning the recent power crisis facing the country.

He said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by President Nana Akufo-Addo is “totally dishonest” with its handling of the frequent power outages popularly known as ‘Dumsor’.

Over the past few weeks, several parts of Ghana have experienced prolonged power outages, forcing businesses to rely on generators.

However, government spokespersons and the power distributor, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), have insisted that there’s no Dumsor and that the country is not shedding load.

Furthermore, the sector minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, appearing before the Government Assurances Committee of Parliament on May 3, reiterated his position that there’s no dumsor in Ghana.

In addition, he said what Ghanaians are experiencing now is ‘Dum sie sie’, which is “profoundly different from Dumsor” experienced under former President John Mahama in 2015.

Also, President Akufo-Addo, addressing workers at the annual May Day celebration on Wednesday, emphasised that the unfortunate era of dumsor has been dealt with effectively.

He said the erratic power supply challenges would be a thing of the past.

“Issues surrounding the maintenance of the transformers have been resolved, Indeed, we have witnessed stable power supply across the country with no load shedding reported anywhere yesterday…I am confident that the unfortunate era of Dumsor will not return,” he said.

But the NDC communicator, Mr. Gyamfi, emphasised that the NPP government is a “bunch of liars” and Ghanaians cannot take their word for it that Dumsor is a thing of the past.

Sammy Gyamfi spoke on TV3’s news analysis programme, The Key Points, on Saturday, May 4.

“Look, what is playing out how two things that number one the ruling NPP government led by [President] Akufo-Addo and Bawumia are totally dishonest.

“These are a bunch of liars; you can’t take their word for it. Number two, these people have no respect for Ghanaians because you can see the display of obscene arrogance and insensitivity to the plight of Ghanaians,” said Sammy Gyamfi.

“At first, he said it was not dumsor…now the president says load-shedding has been solved. How do you solve a problem which never existed? he quizzed.

Meanwhile, according to private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, the recent remarks by the Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, demonstrate that “he does not care about the sentiments of the Ghanaian people” as far as the frequent power outages are concerned.
