Dumsor: Akufo-Addo hasn’t added a single Megawatt to Ghana’s energy requirement – Pelpuo

Akufo-Addo

Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Wa Central constituency, has observed that President Nana Akufo-Addo is the only president not to have added a single megawatt to Ghana’s energy capacity.

He said since the tenure of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, every successive government has worked to improve the power sector for a stable generation, except for President Akufo-Addo.

Mr. Abdul-Rashid, in an interview with Beatrice Adu on 3FM’s news analysis programme Hot Edition on Friday, criticised the energy minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, saying that there’s no dumsor—frequent power outages—under President Akufo-Addo’s regime.

“…to go and do their timetable I don’t know what kind of thinking this is but the truth is that the only regime, the only president from Kwame Nkrumah up until now who has added not a single megawatt to our energy requirement, is the Nana Addo regime, under his ministry.

“John Mahama alone has added about 45 percent, Nkrumah has added 25 percent. President Kufour after he left, had about two two percent of energy. It’s always Nana Addo who has added nothing.

“He’s not looking at that. You have added nothing to the energy requirements of this country. You have had situations where we have dumsor happening all the time, people are suffering, systems are breaking down because you have failed to provide a timetable and this kind of response shows that he is disrespecting the feelings of Ghanaians,” he explained.

However, reacting to the Majority’s petition to the Speaker for urgent recall of the House, the Wa Central lawmaker indicated that the move is not cost-effective as the House is expected to resume later this Month.

“I don’t think there’s any particular urgency to call us back to parliament to incur a lot of cost, bringing all these members of parliament from wherever they are means that you are going to pay their fare back to parliament, sitting allowance and all that because this is outside the normal sitting,” he stated.
