The Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) has cautioned popular artiste, Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, for his alleged mocking of persons with disabilities during a recent performance.
This warning comes in light of Shatta Wale’s mockery of Livingstone Etse Satekla, known in the music industry as Stonebwoy, who has a known disability.
During his performance at a recent event, Shatta Wale made derogatory gestures and remarks that were perceived as mocking persons with disabilities. The video of the incident went viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism from the public.
“You are a bad person that is why God made you a disabled person, you are a disabled person don’t try and fight an able person” Shatta Wale said.
The incident has sparked a conversation about the importance of inclusivity and respect for all individuals.
In response to the incident, the GSPD released a statement dated April 15, condemning Shatta Wale’s actions. They emphasized that mocking persons with disabilities is not only offensive but also a violation of their rights. The GSPD called for awareness and education to promote inclusivity and respect for all individuals, regardless of their abilities.
“The GSPD takes exception to this statement and ask Shatta Wale to retract the statement, remove such video from social media and apologize to all persons with disability and Ghanaian,” the statement said.
Mocking persons with disabilities is considered an offense under the law. The GSPD has therefore urged relevant authorities to investigate the incident and take appropriate action if necessary. The legal consequences for such actions can include fines and even imprisonment.
“Using a person’s disability to mock him or her or making derogatory remarks about a person’s disability is a punishable offence by law, refer to disability Act 715.”
The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the treatment of persons with disabilities in Ghanaian society. Highlights the need for increased awareness, education, and inclusivity across all sectors. Many individuals and organizations have expressed their support for the GSPD’s stance and called for a more inclusive society.
“Disability indeed can be anyone’s lot at any given time” they stated.
As of the time of reporting, Shatta Wale has yet to respond publicly to the caution or the calls for an apology. The Ghanaian music industry and its fans await further developments, hoping for a resolution that fosters understanding and respect for all individuals, regardless of their physical abilities.
