NPP running mate: Dormaahene wants the best for his people – Dr. Asante Otchere

Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Coast and political analyst, has said Dormaahene wants the best for his people in his request to NPP Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to consider his region for a running mate.

The Dormaahene, Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu II, who is the president of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, asked the NPP 2024 presidential candidate to select his running mate from either the Bono or Bono East Region.

Nana Agyemang Badu II, who doubles as the Omanhene of Dormaa Traditional Area, made the call during the Vice President’s courtesy call on the Bono Regional House of Chiefs as part of his tour to the region.

According to him, Bawumia’s choice of running mate selection may affect the support for him in the region should he prioritise others ahead of the Bono and Bono East regions.

However, Dr. Asante Otchere found nothing wrong with the call from the traditional leader, stressing that political figures within the NPP have also made similar calls.

He spoke on Hot Edition on 3FM on Thursday, May 9.

“Certainly everybody will want something good to come to their homestead and the respected chief to put in such a word obviously he is fighting for his people and so in as much as the call appears like a kind of blackmailing, he has equally done nothing different from other politicians who have insisted that the running mate who come from the Ashanti region.

“It is not too wrong in asking for something of that sort. The other aspect of that particular call is to the effect that if you don’t do then most likely the people will also want to vote against you.

“That in itself is going to set Dr. Bawumia thinking and I can sense some kind of urgency in that particular voice as far as the chief is concerned,” said Dr. Asante Otchere, adding, “Dr. Bawumia will be in the best position to decide on that particular request of the chief.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Asante Otchere further noted that the undue delay for Dr. Bawumia to select a running mate is quite worrying.

With barely less than eight months until the December 7 elections, the governing party has yet to unveil its running mate to partner Dr. Bawumia to break the ‘eight’.

Key figures within the governing party have hinted at a ‘Northern-Ashanti’ ticket for the 2024 elections. For the first time, the NPP has elected a candidate from Northern Ghana to lead the party.
